About the dogs

Hylite Cow Dogs have the best Border Collie bloodlines in the country for working cattle. Our Collies have the brains and depth of breeding that is necessary to continue a line of good dogs.

A good working dog can be any colour or breed, but to be a good cattle dog it needs certain traits.

Our Collies have got the goods. The most important is bite, there is no such thing as too much, a dog that will go a long way to block cattle and wants to bite a head and/or front foot. Dogs that are shorthaired, robust and leggy that can travel. Dogs with herd instinct or the ability to read cattle and being able to balance and bring cattle when needed. Trainability is nice but you can lose the amount of bite a dog has with too much training.

We also breed black barbs (crossbreds) that we run along side the collies for catching and handling feral or spoilt cattle. Our crossbreds may not have champions or imports in their pedigree but they do have generations of good paddock dogs. Because of this our dogs are not just guaranteed to work they are guaranteed to bite.

About us

We breed dogs because we need them to earn a living but mostly because we enjoy them, there is no greater thrill than watching a pup work for the first time or in helping someone get started with their dog.

Trevor and Amanda Tessman have been breeding working dogs at their property in Kingaroy for 16 years. Amanda spends her time raising puppies and arguing with Trev over which dogs to breed (sometimes she wins). Trevor earns his living contract mustering as well as training horses and dogs.

Trevor and Amanda are also availavble for dog training schools, just call us with any enquiries.
